What causes water hammer in pipes
When a tap is turned off, clanging pipes are a regular occurrence. This situation is known as "water hammer," or "hydraulic shock" in technical plumbing terminology. The sound you hear is a shockwave that causes pipes to move and collide with adjacent frames or one another. If the pipes are not sufficiently supported or if the valves start to deteriorate, the banging frequently grows worse.
